For most organizations, the challenge that ongoing change presents is significant for its leaders and its people and it is fairly mainstream knowledge today that most organization change initiatives fail to deliver senior managements desired or expected results.
From our experience, large scale change work tends to raise some level of organization anxiety and therefore there is often an attraction towards highly analytical and diagnostic approaches with prescriptive alignment orientations and precise timetables.
We are aware that many ‘change management’ providers may well offer such ‘formulaic’ approaches, and whilst those approaches can bring benefits to some change agendas (e.g. down sizing), our experience is that generative and sustainable organization change is a phenomenon which is not suitable for mechanistic approaches, or ‘push’ methodologies associated with a ‘mechanistic’ mentality. This archaic organization metaphor and approaches to change have generated the unhappy legacy of troubling trade-offs that many of us have heard of or even been a part of.
